Coffee, art is good mix for entrepreneurs, neighbors

LONG BEACH - Sipology has East Village coffeegoers coming in for cupcakes and staying for the artwork. The gallery and coffee house offers a variety of blended drinks and food items while also housing art from international and local artists.

Owners Isaac  and Oscar Orosco came up with the concept as a way of incorporating two businesses that would help support each other financially.

Sipology opened March15 at the corner of East Broadway and Linden Avenue and has since been serving food and drinks that locals find affordable, said chef Lisette Galeas.

"All food items are locally grown and are made from scratch everyday," she said. "The welcoming space of the coffee shop has brought in a hip crowd that is just what the area needed."

Katie Gibson, owner of women's fashions store See Jane..., said she has been seeing new clientele since the opening of the coffeehouse.

"It has activated this corner and brought in much more people," she said.

The business features two art galleries with works from German artist Mark Remus and Long Beach artist Michael Pukac on display. One of the galleries is solely dedicated to work from local artists, said Rod Valencia, art curator.

There is a long waiting list of artists that will display their work for a 60-day period at the coffeehouse, he said.

"We strongly encourage local Long Beach artists to submit their work," said Valencia.

In the following months a Latin Grill will be added next to Sipology that will feature Latin cuisine and artwork from Latin artists all across Southern California.

The coffee shop will host an art gallery auction to benefit Life Group LA, a grass-roots AIDS organization, on June 20. Local Southern California artists will donate work that will be put up for auction.
